We are glad to share another student story. This time Melvin from Tanzania shares his experience about studying and living in Estonia.
1. Please introduce yourself.
Hi! My name is Melvin Andulile Mwakitwange and I am from Tanzania.
- How did you come across with EAUS?
I came across EUAS from googling Game design and development courses in Europe and found a particular site that listed the university as one of them.
- What are you studying at EUAS and why did you choose it?
I chose Game design and development for multiple reasons, but what stands out is that I love everything to do with games and wanting to make them for a living is really special. There is no other place that would provide this, on top of an ever growing tech country to learn from.
- How did you adapt in Estonia?
Adapting was not easy, but I didn't struggle that much. Coming from a less developed country in terms of tech, I didn't want to do too much as I was afraid of messing up or attracting too much attention to myself. So I slowly eased myself to the life here.
- Have you learned any Estonian? Any favourite Estonian words or phrases?
I have learned some Estonian and I do like the phrase ''Kuidas läheb?'' meaning How are you?.
- Are there any cultural differences between Tanzania and Estonia?
There are plenty of differences in culture between Estonia and Tanzania. For starters we are religious people so we celebrate a lot of religious holidays that I see are not celebrated in Estonia. The other thing I can think of is dress style.
- How would you compare your academic and social life in your home country and in Estonia?
Academics are taken very seriously in Tanzania, we are taught that education is very important to our success in the future, so at a very young age we grow up thinking of getting traditional jobs like a doctor and engineer.
Socially Tanzanians are very outgoing characters unlike Estonians who tend to be more reserved.
1. Do you have any specific goals?.
One particular goal is to be involved with the first and most successful game company in Tanzania. This inspiration drives me to reach for possibilities and to do what has never been done in my home country.
- What would your advice be for future students?
My advice for future students would be to make sure your goals are realistic enough to happen, but not too low for you to settle for something average, so you can be proud of what you achieved and more.
- What are your plans for the future?
My future is my tomorrow so whatever I do today will affect my tomorrow. I cannot say for sure about my future but I hope that it will involve me owning and running my very own successful gaming company.
