Introducing the speaker in the academic part of the 10th Annual Entrepreneurship and Innovation Conference (EIC), Marika Eik
Marika Eik, D.Sc. (Technology), is a Data Scientist at Mainor AS and a Senior Researcher at the Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences. Marika is inspired by the application of Machine Learning methods to different engineering and technological problems. She has extensive experience and motivation in testing and modelling of Fibre Reinforced Concrete. Marika has a wide range of interests: Data analysis, Machine Learning, R-programming language, Python, IT analyst, Fibre Reinforced Concrete. Marika has completed her Postdoctoral Research at Aalto University, Finland. The project's objectives included the quantification of the micro-structure and mineralogical composition of the cement paste around the fibre and correlating the results obtained with the macro-scale behavior of the final composite.
At the EIC conference, Marika will present a case study of Ülemiste City "Modeling of Traffic Flow Considering Weather Properties" (Authors: Marika Eik, Margarita Matson, and Juri Belikov).
Over the past decades, issues related to sustainable environment have become more acute due to rapid growth of urbanisation forms. Smart City concepts include ensuring a green environment through low carbon emissions technology. For the Ülemiste City (ÜC) following the Smart City best practices, the development of sustainable environment including the mobility is among top objectives. The forecasting of traffic flows enables CO2 emission evaluations from the transportation, as well as may encourage the use of autonomous vehicles. The machine learning (ML) models can be used to support the development of urbanisation forms. Traffic flow forecasting methods commonly use historical traffic data, although, the weather may also affect traffic conditions. The present study focuses on the development of ML models forecasting the number of incoming/outgoing cars and vans arriving to ÜC through the Suur-Sõjamäe-Lõõtsa road intersection. The study also addresses the effect of weather properties on the ML model’s accuracy. The historical traffic data were generated by external ML object detection model. The weather data were received from EMHI. Wind speed, air temperature and weather phenomena were considered as weather variables.
